Flourish: April is Stress Awareness Month

04/19/2023

Risks associated with stress

  • Heart disease: Stress can increase heart rate and blood flow, causing cholesterol to be released in the bloodstream.
  • Depression: Chronic stress can be linked to depression and anxiety. In a survey done by WebMD, 80% of people with stress-related jobs were at risk of developing depression.
  • Obesity: When people are stressed, they look for “comfort food.” These foods are usually high in calories and fat, which can lead to weight gain.
  • Diabetes: Stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as excessive eating and drinking. This can lead to type 2 diabetes.

5 tips for managing stress

  1. Take care of yourself: Practice eating healthy, getting exercise and plenty of sleep, and taking breaks.
  2. Take care of your body: Try stress-reducing exercises such as stretching, meditating or doing yoga.
  3. Talk to others: Share your problems with trusted friends and family. Consider joining our Social Connect class, focusing on managing and reducing stress.
