Last year, we shared Adrienne’s story about finding strength, balance and confidence through Juniper classes. Since then, she has continued her wellness journey, discovering that the greatest benefits often come not from a single class, but from showing up week after week, year after year.
Today, Adrienne is approaching her third year in Juniper’s Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL) program and recently completed both the beginner and advanced Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance classes. While she decided to take a break from Tai Ji Quan classes this summer, practicing tai chi has become part of her everyday morning routine.
“It’s a wonderful way to start the day gently. I can do the exercises outside and enjoy the fresh air. When I’m done, I feel more grounded. It’s as much a mental exercise as a physical one.”
What started as an exercise class has evolved into a set of habits that carry over into daily life. Adrienne finds herself using techniques she learned through Juniper when reaching for items, carrying heavy objects, or navigating stairs.
“Juniper has made me more attuned to my body. I always hear my instructor’s voice in the back of my mind telling me to ‘reach responsibly!’ I always use a sturdy step stool to get something up high. I use the handrail when I am going down stairs.”
Those habits have helped Adrienne continue to feel strong and confident. She has noticed improvements in her leg strength through SAIL and appreciates how the gradual progress has added up over time.
“Building muscle has been really rewarding for me. Impressing my kids has been fun. They ask me if I need help with something and I say ‘No, I have muscles now!” she says with a chuckle.
The physical benefits are only one reason she continues to return. Participating in live classes creates accountability, structure and connection. Each week, Adrienne joins familiar faces from across Minnesota, sharing a simple but meaningful sense of community.
“If you’re in the class, you’re doing something about your health,” she says. “It’s something positive we can do together. It’s nice to have that mutual support,” she says.
The convenience of joining classes from home has also made it easier to stay consistent.
“Taking Juniper classes online is a safe way for me to be active, and that has helped build my confidence. Being able to log in and get the benefit of an exercise class is so convenient. In three years, I don’t think I’ve ever missed a class!”
For Adrienne, staying active is about more than exercise. It’s about maintaining the strength and independence to continue enjoying the things that matter most, whether that means taking walks with her husband, paddling a canoe on a summer day, caring for her home, or gathering friends and family around the dinner table.
When asked what role Juniper plays in her life today, Adrienne doesn’t hesitate.
“I can’t say enough about the difference Juniper has made. I’m so committed because I want to keep what I have. I’m trying to be as strong and healthy as I can.”
Her experience is a reminder that healthy aging isn’t about dramatic transformations. It’s about building sustainable routines, practicing healthy habits, and finding support along the way.
Three years after that first class, Adrienne is still seeing the benefits of showing up, and she’s proof that lasting change can happen one class at a time.
