Chronic Pain Self-Management is a group class designed to help participants live a healthy life with chronic pain by managing their symptoms. This program teaches new strategies that will give participants the confidence, motivation, and skills needed to manage living with chronic pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) is an evidence-based fall prevention program designed for older adults developed by Fuzhong Li, Ph.D., Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. TJQMBB represents a substantive enhancement of traditional Tai Ji Quan as it transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints and lower - extremity muscle strength.

This class includes 24 sessions. There are some weeks without any scheduled classes. You will receive a printed schedule. Payment is made in person on the first day of class (check or cash). The $20 fee covers all 24 sessions.

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed for older adults to manage falls and increase activity levels. Two trained coaches guide participants through learning and activities that emphasize strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants show improved balance, flexibility and strength while viewing falls as controllable.

Pre-register for the class by September 1, 2025. Registration is open to the general public (age 60+), with priority registration given to Lyngblomsten-Lino Lakes residents through August 14, 2025. Class will be held in the 4th floor Community Room.

TJQMFBB is an evidence-based regime of 8 adapted forms aimed at improving balance, lower body strength, functional coordination and movement, and preventing falls. The prerequisite for this class is the beginner Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance. This class will use the 8 forms to expand, challenge and improve muscles. The instructor will provide the link for class for all registered participants.

This class is for anyone who would like to improve their balance, strength and coordination. No prior knowledge or experience in Tai Ji is needed. Classes are done from seated and standing and do not require getting up and down from the floor. Please wear comfortable clothing Wear shoes that are well-fitting and comfortable (not flip flops or heels). Bring a water bottle (optional). A chair without wheels is needed. (ie. - a folding chair) Suggested class cost is $5/person per class. (24 classes per session.) Participants can pay what they are able. Those who have MSHO insurance (Minnesota Senior Health Options health plan) do not make any donation. About the instructor: Jessica Karpinske is the owner of Rooted in Wellness LLC, serving the Duluth area. She works with individuals and small groups, offering health coaching, personal training, and both private and group yoga classes. Her approach emphasizes feeling at home in your body, supporting wellness at the root level, and cultivating lasting self-love. Jessica is passionate about helping clients create sustainable, healthy lifestyles that support longevity and reduce dis-ease. She has been teaching Tai Ji Quan since 2016 and enjoys guiding both long-time participants and those new to the practice. Her classes offer a welcoming space to build strength, balance, and inner calm.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is for people who want to avoid type 2 diabetes. It uses a curriculum developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and cuts your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. The program helps you make lasting changes, such as eating healthier, adding physical activity into your daily routine, and reducing stress.

Class will take place at the YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center in the Event Room. Please check in at the front desk (Y membership not required). Meet and greet, information, and paperwork day will take place on Wednesday, September 10th from 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Emily Ranta, Prevent T2 coach and Brach Executive Director of the YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center, has a passion for helping class participants learn how to take control of their health, find small lifestyle changes that work, and reduce their risk of chronic disease. She holds her masters degree in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from Montana State University and her undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Minnesota- Duluth.

Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness is the single most important activity adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.
