Living Well with Chronic Conditions is designed to improve the self-management skills of people living with ongoing health issues. Conditions like arthritis, mental health conditions, chronic pain, cancer, or diabetes can cause those affected to lose physical conditioning and suffer health problems over many years. This program teaches new strategies that will give participants the confidence, motivation, and skills needed to manage living with a chronic health condition.

*PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS CLASS* This is a virtual workshop. Basic knowledge of computer skills is STRONGLY recommended. All participants will need a device with a camera and speaker capabilities to participate in this class. You will need Zoom downloaded on the device you wish to use prior to the start of class. WE STRONGLY ADVISE NOT USEING A PHONE FOR THIS WORKSHOP. A tablet, laptop, or PC is the best choice. Virtual classes come with a hard copy paperback book, being sent via US mail once ElderCircle receives all required registration paperwork. Please complete the pre-class survey, and agree to the insurance, liability and privacy policy forms at the time of registration. These MUST be completed before we allow access to the virtual class. Please contact Danielle with questions. A $5.00 donation is suggested (classes are valued at $170.00 per person, and we are able to offer them to you at no charge) participants will not be denied if they do not make a donation. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed for older adults to manage falls and increase activity levels. Two trained coaches guide participants through learning and activities that emphasize strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants show improved balance, flexibility and strength while viewing falls as controllable.

Classes will be taught in lao language.

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) is an evidence-based fall prevention program designed for older adults developed by Fuzhong Li, Ph.D., Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. TJQMBB represents a substantive enhancement of traditional Tai Ji Quan as it transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints and lower - extremity muscle strength.

This workshop is in-person at The Pillars of Grand Rapids (2060 SW 8th St, Grand Rapids, MN 55744) in the Yoga Studio. The studio has chairs and mirrors on one side of the room. Great for Tai Ji. This class meets twice per week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30am-12:30pm. Lloyd Adams is an experienced Tai Ji Quan class instructor. He will be leading this workshop for you for a total of 24 sessions. Stop at the front desk of the building and staff will show you to the yoga studio. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) is a group exercise class for people with arthritis who want safe ways to stay active, reduce pain, and move more easily. Participants learn from a trained instructor on how to deal with challenges like pain that keep them from staying active. Participants will practice stretching, breathing, endurance, and balance activities tailored for their ability and skill level. AFEP can help control pain, boost energy and mood, and increase confidence about staying active and managing arthritis.

This is an ongoing class. No need to wait until next session to join. You will need to call the leader to have your name added to the roster after official registration is closed.

Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness is the single most important activity adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.

Participants must have completed the 1st 12 weeks of the Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance class before the start of this session. Please wear comfortable clothing, shoes that are well-fitting and comfortable (not flip flops or heels). Bring a water bottle (optional). A chair without wheels is needed. Suggested class cost is $5/person per class. (24 classes per session.) Participants can pay what they are able. About the instructor: Jessica Karpinske is the owner of Rooted In Wellness LLC in the Duluth area. She works with individuals and small groups, providing health coaching and personal training sessions, private and group yoga classes with an overall focus on feeling good in your skin, improving health and wellness at the root level and tapping into a sense of self-love. Jessica loves working with clients to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle that provides a foundation for a long life free of dis-ease. Jessica has been teaching this Tai Ji program since 2016. She maintains a consistent group of advanced Tai Ji participants and also enjoys leading new classes.
