Make sure you’re as safe as you can be when you hit the road

Older adults are among the safest drivers. Yet, changes in vision, hearing and reflexes can affect even the most experienced driver. One of the best ways to enhance your safety is taking a refresher or defensive driving course. Not only will you learn the latest techniques, you might just score a discount on your car insurance.

Check out these safety tips from driving experts:

  • Take a refresher driving course for mature drivers. Contact your local community education program, AARP or AAA for events near you.
  • Look into a CarFit event, a 12-point check of your vehicle that comes with recommendations for adjustments.
  • Explore assistive devices for your car. These include visor and seat belt extenders, seat and back support cushions, larger rear-view and side-view mirrors and more.
  • Stay alert to changes in your vision and physical abilities.
  • Wear your seat belt and stick to the speed limit.
  • Keep your windows, mirrors and headlights clean.
  • Consider having a driving evaluation.
  • Keep a safe (3-second) distance between your car and the one in front of you.
  • Don’t rely solely on technology. Most newer cars come with technology, such as backup cameras, designed to enhance safety. Make sure to keep your focus on driving and don’t forgo the basics, such as turning your head to check blind spots.
