Six tips for choosing the right athletic shoes

Wearing athletic shoes that are worn, don't fit well or don’t provide enough support can lead to stress on your feet, lower leg, hip and spine. Quality, properly fitting shoes can help improve your everyday life, because if your feet are comfortable you’re more likely to stay active. Here's some tips when choosing athletic shoes:

  • Get your feet measured. Our feet can change as we age, getting wider and/or longer. Also, keep in mind that many people have one foot that’s larger than the other.
  • Make sure they’re not too tight or too loose.
  • Look for soft, breathable material that doesn’t rub or irritate your skin.
  • Choose adequate arch support and a firm sole that doesn’t twist easily or bend.
  • Buy styles with laces, straps or velcro to keep your feet in place and comfortable.
  • Ask your podiatrist for recommendations, based on your unique situation. Or visit a pedorthist: a professional who helps fit and modify shoes. Some shoe stores offer their services free.
