What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is persistent pain that lasts for months or even years. It can stem from conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia or back issues. Managing this pain involves a combination of medication, physical therapy, lifestyle changes and coping strategies.

Tips for managing chronic pain while traveling

Plan Ahead

  • Consult your doctor: Discuss travel plans with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and possible medication adjustments.
  • Prepare your medications: Pack enough medication for the trip plus extra days. Keep them in original containers with a copy of your prescriptions.

Pack Smart

  • Comfort items: Bring a travel pillow, heat/cold packs and supportive shoes.
  • Medication management: Use a pill organizer and set phone reminders for doses.

Choose Comfortable Transportation

  • Air travel: Request wheelchair assistance and book an aisle seat. Use compression socks.
  • Road trips: Take frequent breaks to stretch and walk. Use lumbar cushions for support.

Stay Active

  • Stretching and movement: Do gentle stretches, yoga poses or short walks to prevent stiffness.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to reduce pain and inflammation.

Manage Stress

  • Relaxation techniques: Practice deep breathing, meditation or mindfulness.
  • Pace yourself: Balance activities with rest to avoid overexertion.

A Matter of Balance

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed for older adults to manage falls and increase activity levels. Two trained coaches guide participants through learning and activities that emphasize strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants show improved balance, flexibility and strength while viewing falls as controllable.
