- 47% of men have high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the most common cause of death in American men. Some factors that put these men at higher risk include diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity and extreme alcohol use.
- One in nine men is affected by prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men and can affect them in multiple ways.
- About 14.6% of men are diabetic. Men are more like to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes because their bodies store more fat in their bellies. Learn more about our Diabetes Prevention Program here.
5 tips to staying healthy during Men's Health Month
- Visit your doctor. Men are more likely to avoid going to the doctor than women. Change this fact by scheduling yearly checkups with your doctor.
- Exercise. Prevent heart disease by keeping a regular exercise routine. Try walking, jogging, swimming or other sports to stay in shape.
- Measure your waist. Men with larger waists are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Be sure your waist measures less than 40 inches around.
- Cover up. Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer and men over the age of 50 are more at risk. Prevent this skin cancer by spending time in the shade, wearing sunblock and covering your body with hats and protective clothing.
- Keep an eye out for prostate cancer. Avoid the high statistic of men affected by prostate cancer by having regular checkups with your doctor. Developing pain while urinating or noticing blood in the urine can be signs of prostate problems.
