Flourish: Do you have arthritis?

3/15/2023

Arthritis is defined as pain, tenderness and swelling in one or more joins. One common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis where the slippery tissue covering the end of the bones break down. Symptoms of this disease vary but usually include pain, stiffness, swelling, redness and decrease range of motion.

Arthritis Risk Factors

  • Gender. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with arthritis than men because they have weaker joints and higher hormone levels.
  • Weight. Those who are overweight are more likely to develop arthritis.
  • Your work. Work that involves repeated bending, squatting or lifting can lead to arthritis in the knees and other joints.
  • Hereditary. Some types of arthritis can be passed down through genes.

Motion is Lotion

Physical activity is vital in managing arthritis. Stiffness can be reduced by simply walking or partaking in another low-impact activity once a day. With those living with arthritis, consider joining Juniper’s Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. This class is for anyone interested in becoming more physically active. It is particularly suited for people who:

  • Have a diagnosis of arthritis
  • Suffer from stiffness, fatigue or arthritis pain
  • Could benefit from increased physical activity
