Can proper footwear lead to falling?

There are many ways that wearing the wrong footwear can lead to falling. As we grow older, our reflexes are slow and it may be difficult to maintain balance.

  • Bare feet or feet with socks can drastically increase your risk of falling. This is due to not having grip or stability on the ground.
  • Wearing shoes that are not properly tied can cause you to easily trip.
  • Shoes with heels over 1 inch do not provide great traction on the ground. Heeled shoes also cause ankle instability, leading to falls.

 

4 tips on what to look for in footwear

  1. Choose shoes with a strong grip. The soles out the outside should be strong and textured in a rubber sole. Make sure you check them often and replace them when the tread is worn down.
  2. Shoes should fit well. Your shoes should be snug and not fall off your heel or cause your toes to feel squished.
  3. Have great support. Shoes should have a wide base of support, this increases stability while walking.
  4. Avoid heels. Shoes with high heels can cause bad posture, balance issues and ankle stability, leading to falls. If you are wearing a heel, make sure they are under an inch in height.
